Closed During Weekdays
Access to Tarawera Falls is closed during weekdays due to an increase in forestry operations. Please stay clear of this area for your own safety.
The forest may be closed in summer when the fire risk is high, so please call in advance if you plan to make travel arrangements.
Open During Weekends & Public Holidays Only
Access to Tarawera Falls is through privately owned land and requires you to obtain a permit.
Public access to Tarawera Falls is available during weekends and public holidays ONLY!
Road vehicle access will NOT be granted to Lake Tarawera/Te Tapahoro.
Permits must be displayed on the dashboard of your vehicle for security purposes.
To obtain a permit, please visit the Kawerau isite during weekends and public holidays ONLY!

All public access to hikoi Maunga/Mt. Pūtauaki is closed.
Hunting in Tarawera Forest
You must be an active registered member of the Ngā Kaitiaki o Pokohu Hunting Club to hunt in the Tarawera Forest.
All registered members are descendants of a MIL shareholder or a beneficiary of a registered MIL trust.
All hunting administration is managed by the Ngā Kaitiaki o Pokohu Hunting Club Committee.
